My Forrest Gump moment.

So last night we were at a friends house and were talking about how I REALLY want to run a 5k in April. The gals that were there had trained for a 5k last year and told me to google how to train for it, that basically you run/walk in intervals until you build up your endurance. I got on google this A.M. and was not finding the training they were talking about. Everything I found looked way too aggressive for this body. The one thing that really stuck out... and really it totally could have been an ad.... said "start running today." So... I headed over to the gym and after doing my warm up and resistance I climbed onto the treadmill. I wasn't sure exactly what to do but i managed to program the little walk/jog/run buttons to paces I felt comfortable with and for 30 minutes I did intervals!!!! I jogged for 2 minutes and walked for 3. That's right boys and girls... in the words of Forrest himself "I wAs RuNnIn!!!!!" Well really I was jogging but holy cow, I was seriously moving in a running type motion and the best part is I didn't die!
I felt a huge sense of accomplishment today and I can't WAIT to work out again! It's amazing how good it feels to break down these walls I've built for myself. I've always told myself I can do anything if I want it bad enough. I guess i finally do. :o)

Wow, what a great story!!! You sound so excited about it too. I get stuck doing the same thing, and really need to push myself more when I work out too. I get lazy and just walk often. So, you inspired me to push alittle harder at this afternoon's workout!

Last year when we decided to do the 5k, we had NO training whatsoever! It really is true, start today and you can build up the endurance to not only complete it, but kick butt in it!! I think that we are definately going to do it again this year. I'm proud of you!

That's awesome! I ran my first 5k last year and I loved it! I didn't do any training, I just slowly started to run more and more and finally was able to run three miles! It's a great feeling!

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on losing five pounds! That is great news. Also, 5k's ARE fun. We have one every August at work, and I usually compete in another during our work conferences. I always put off the training, so my time usually hovers around 40 minutes. Way to go getting an early start. I'd love to hear how you do after your race. When is it?

I think i FORGOT to mention that the training is just to teach me to run again. I ran competitively ten years ago but have been terrified to run as I've approached 200 lbs. I don't necessarily want to "train" for a 5k. I just needed a way to ease into actually getting my big fat body moving in a running position! This is why I'm so excited... I really was afraid that at my size, it couldn't be done!

I just joined Golds here in AF! I started last year with the running, and that is the exact way I did it. I have to start again, because the Utah ladies get together and do a 5k in the spring!

You and your great name ;) have inspired me to work towards the annual Women's Fitness run here in Boise in Sept. Which is HUGE for me, because I'm a self proclaimed running-hater. I always thought I was a horrible runner (probably due to my short legs), but I actually have been liking the jogging on the wii fit, maybe when it warms up a bit I will move it outside and get some fresh air. Keep it up!
